Millennium Notes

When I first started studying about the Millennium I had very mixed emotions. There are many things I wonder about and know that I won’t find all the answers to the questions I have. I worry that Archer is getting gipped, which means I would be gipped too, with the everyday experiences he could have in this life, and possibly won’t have in the next life. Because of these feelings I decided to focus on the Millennium, Second Coming of Christ and added a bit of this and that which seemed to apply. This has ended up being a series of quotes to help me out when I start feeling down and gipped. It was a build up from a previous post I wrote about my questions. Then part of it happened while Peter and I judged at a DECA event my brother was helping run. I was sad Archer wouldn’t get to compete in something like that (though Kyle has promised to be his DECA advisor in the Millennium). Maybe he got to watch while we were there and experienced it that way. My questions and feelings have led me to research and compile some notes. The yellow highlights are my thoughts/questions. I understand that many things I will just have to wait and see what happens. I feel like this is enduring in faith and hope. Faith in Christ, knowing that Archer is currently in a better place, even if I want him here. Faith in the plan of our Heavenly Father, knowing that he will get to grow and experience life in a place of peace with the best leader possible, Jesus Christ. Hope that we will be worthy to raise him in the Millennium. Faith that the bands of death were broken by Jesus Christ’s resurrection and is something that is applicable to all. I hope these quotes will be of interest to you and bring you the same peace it has brought me. I still miss my Archie-bug, but know he is free from disease and pain, that he is a chosen spirit that was here a brief time to receive his body and having him not with us has created an even greater desire to be better and worthy to live with him some day.

Gospel Topics:

“A millennium is a period of 1,000 years. When we speak of “the Millennium,” we refer to the 1,000 years following the Savior’s Second Coming (see Revelation 20:4; Doctrine and Covenants 29:11). During the Millennium, “Christ will reign personally upon the earth” (Articles of Faith 1:10).”

The Millennium will be a time of peace, no enmity. (Isaiah 11:6–9) Satan is “caged” until the end. (Revelation 20:1–4) Good people on the earth, missionary work still going on. Temple work happening. Work for the dead happening… Not everyone is resurrected to experience the Millennium… Children will grow up without sin. (D&C 45:58) I like this!

At the end of the Millennium Satan will be loosed and fight against everyone… How, will that happen? Physical fight? This would be tricky for Satan without a body… Debate? Or is it more like it is now, a little bit of both?

New Era, June 2014

Those remaining on the earth during the Millennium will be the good people of the earth—those who were righteous and just, regardless of their religion…The wicked will not remain on the earth and will not be resurrected until after the Millennium.

So, what will people do during these 1,000 years? We know that a main focus will be to continue the work of salvation—helping people come unto Christ. Church members will share the gospel with those remaining who have not received it in its fulness. Family history and temple work will be especially important and will link the entire family of man all the way back to Adam and Eve.

A thousand years is a long time, so it’s safe to assume that people will likely do a wide variety of things that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy” (Articles of Faith 1:13) but that have not necessarily been mentioned in any of the revelations.

Gospel Principles

During the Millennium, Jesus will “reign personally upon the earth” (Articles of Faith 1:10). Joseph Smith explained that Jesus will “reign over the Saints and come down and instruct” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 258).

In many ways, life will be much as it is now, except that everything will be done in righteousness. People will eat and drink and will wear clothing. (See Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young [1997], 333.) People will continue to plant and harvest crops and build houses (see Isaiah 65:21). I really appreciate this quote.

Instead of being a time of rest, the Millennium is to be a time for all to labor. Idleness will not be found, better methods will be employed, not so much time will be consumed in the daily pursuits and more time will be given to the things of the Kingdom. The saints will be kept busy in the temples which shall be built in all parts of the land. In fact, so busy will they be that the temples will be occupied most of the time. How does this work with a baby? I guess we will find out.

I pray every day of my life that the Lord will hasten His work. … I am praying for the end of the world because I want a better world. I want the coming of Christ. I want the reign of peace. I want the time to come when every man can live in peace and in the spirit of faith, humility, and prayer. I have now added this to my daily prayers.

Joseph F. Smith

Would we be satisfied to see the children we bury in their infancy remain as children only, throughout the countless ages of eternity? No! Neither would the spirits that did possess the tabernacles of our children be satisfied to remain in that condition. But we know our children will not be compelled to remain as a child in stature always, for it was revealed from God, the fountain of truth, through Joseph Smith the prophet, in this dispensation, that in the resurrection of the dead the child that was buried in its infancy will come up in the form of the child that it was when it was laid down; then it will begin to develop. From the day of the resurrection, the body will develop until it reaches the full measure of the stature of its spirit, whether it be male or female. If the spirit possessed the intelligence of God and the aspirations of mortal souls, it could not be satisfied with anything less than this.

Joseph Smith taught the doctrine that the infant child that was laid away in death would come up in the resurrection as a child; and, pointing to the mother of a lifeless child, he said to her: “You will have the joy, the pleasure, and satisfaction of nurturing this child, after its resurrection, until it reaches the full stature of its spirit.” There is restitution, there is growth, there is development, after the resurrection from death. I love this truth. It speaks volumes of happiness, of joy and gratitude to my soul. Thank the Lord he has revealed these principles to us.

We are destined to come forth out of the grave as Jesus did, and to obtain immortal bodies as he did—that is, that our tabernacles are to become immortal as his became immortal, that the spirit and the body may be joined together and become one living being, indivisible, inseparable, eternal.

Heber J. Grant

It is a very great blessing that in the providences of the Lord and in the revelations that have been given by our Father in heaven, we have the assurance that the spirit and the body, in due time, will be reunited, notwithstanding the unbelief that there is in the world today—and there certainly is great skepticism and unbelief in relation to this matter. But notwithstanding this, we have assurance through the revelations that have been given by the Lord our God, that that is the purpose of God, that the body and the spirit shall be eternally united and that there will come a time, through the blessing and mercy of God, when we will no more have sorrow but when we shall have conquered all of these things that are of a trying and distressing character, and shall stand up in the presence of the living God, filled with joy and peace and satisfaction.

More of my dear ones are on the other side than are here, and it will not be long in the natural course of events before I, too, will receive my summons to pass on. I am not looking forward to that time with anxiety and distress, but with hope and with the assurance that the change, when it occurs, will be for increasing happiness and advantages that we cannot know in mortality.

When we realize that death is only one of the steps that the children of God shall take throughout eternity, and that it is according to his plan, it robs death of its sting and brings us face to face with the reality of eternal life. Many families have been called upon to say good-bye temporarily to those they love. When such passings occur, they disturb us, if we will let them, and thus bring great sorrow into our lives. But if our spiritual eyes could be opened and we could see, we would be comforted, I am sure, with what our vision would behold. The Lord has not left us without hope. On the contrary he has given us every assurance of eternal happiness, if we will accept his advice and counsel while here in mortality.

When we pass through the portals of death … He’s going to say to us, “Now you took upon yourselves my name. What have you done with my name? Have you ever brought disgrace to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, as a member of my church?” Imagine a frown, imagine He shakes His head and turns and walks away. … But imagine when we meet Him that a smile lights up His face. He puts out His beckoning arms to us, and says to us, “My son, my daughter, you’ve been faithful on earth. You’ve kept the faith. You’ve finished your work. There’s now a crown prepared for such as you in my kingdom.” [See 2 Timothy 4:7–8.] I can’t think of any ecstasy in all the world that will transcend that kind of a reception into the presence of the Almighty, in that world to come.
